The lower jaw has little suction due to the tongue poking through the middle. This allows the muscles of facial expression etc to dislodge the denture. Practice and control usually solve this issue but occasionally something more may be required. This is where implants can be used as an anchor. Implant retained dentures aren’t for everyone so when a patient considers them, I would first refer to a specialist in the field of placing the implants to investigate your suitability and help to consider the way forward.
Often only two implants are required and the denture remains removable for ease of maintenance.
