I spent time training in such disciplines as Crown & Bridge, Cobalt Chrome, Prosthetics (dentures etc), special prosthetics (special case denture construction) and Orthodontics. Once qualified I gained valuable experience by working a further 2 years concentrating mainly on Orthodontics and Prosthetics. I considered the practice of prosthetics to be the most rewarding field that I had undertaken and so commenced the Advanced Dental Technicians Training Course to qualify as a Dental Prosthetist (or clinical dental technician). Later on I took advantage of the opportunity to complete the Partial Denture Bridging course in1996 and the Implant retained over-denture course in 2002. More recently I undertook the advanced diploma course at RMIT.
When still at the Dental Hospital I opened a part time practice in Oak Park, Victoria. 10 years after starting my training I was eligible for long service leave and used this as an opportunity to open my Denture Clinic full time. For many years I also ran a practice in Portland until the work flow in Oak Park became such that I had to conclude my trips to the country. In August 2012, I was elected to the committee of ADPA(vic) and in the same year completed the Advanced Diploma in Dental Prosthetics.
Latterly I’ve had the privilege to be a casual lecturer at Melbourne University where I teach Dentists in training about the art of manufacturing dentures.
Gil’ approached me to re-train as a Dental Technician. His appreciation for fine tolerances and exacting methodologies made him the perfect candidate for the Dental industry, which he took to like a duck to water.
Years later, Gil’ bought into the practice as a part owner. He now performs the task of Dental Technician and Laboratory Manager.
