My Denture Broke: What Do I Do Right Now? (Emergency Repair Guide)

"Your denture snapped. Your heart sank. Here is a calm, step-by-step guide on what to do in the first hour, and why calling a prosthetist with an on-site lab gets you back to eating today."

My Denture Broke: What Do I Do Right Now?

It happens in a split second. You drop your plate on bathroom tiles. You bite down on something hard. Or you notice a hairline crack that finally gives way.

Whatever the cause, a broken denture is deeply stressful, especially if it happens on a weekday morning before work or right before a weekend event.

Here is what to do in the first hour, and what you must avoid doing to protect your plate.

Step 1: Remove the Pieces and Check the Damage

A cracked plate with sharp edges can slice your gums or tongue. Take the denture out and place it on a clean towel. Check what happened:

  • One clean snap? This is the easiest type of fracture to repair in our lab.
  • Multiple fragments? Gather every small piece carefully.
  • A tooth detached? Save that tooth. We can often chemically re-bond the original tooth directly into the plate.

Step 2: Put Away the Superglue

We understand the instinct: you have glue in the drawer and you need to leave the house. But superglue will make the situation worse:

  1. It is toxic in the mouth: Cyanoacrylate dissolves in saliva and irritates gum tissue.
  2. It distorts the plastic: Superglue creates heat that permanently warps the acrylic edges.
  3. It ruins professional repair: If the broken edges melt or become contaminated with glue crust, our technicians must grind away the material, which destroys the original bite alignment.

Step 3: Keep the Pieces Moist

Place the broken sections into a clean zip-lock container with a damp paper towel. Keeping the acrylic hydrated prevents minor warping while you travel to the clinic.

Step 4: Call a Dental Prosthetist with an On-Site Laboratory

General dental practices usually do not have fabrication equipment in their clinic. They have to courier your plate to an external commercial laboratory, leaving you without teeth for 3 to 5 business days.

At Oak Park Dental & Denture Clinic, we run our own on-site dental laboratory.

  • We do not mail your plate anywhere.
  • Most clean midline fractures and tooth re-bonds are completed in 1 to 2 hours.
  • You can wait in our lounge or run errands in Oak Park and leave with your teeth back in place.

Why Dentures Break (and How to Stop It Happening Again)

Cause of FractureWhy It HappensPermanent Prevention
Dropping on hard surfacesWet acrylic slips easily during cleaningClean over a folded towel or a sink filled with water
Gum bone resorption (rocking)Gums shrink over time, creating a gap under the center of the plateGet a professional hard reline every 2 years
Old, brittle acrylicPMMA acrylic thins and loses flexibility after 5+ yearsHave your prosthetist inspect the plate thickness
Heavy bite forcesClenching or chewing hard items (ice, hard sweets)Consider high-impact acrylic (enigmaLIFE+) or cast metal reinforcement

The Hidden Cause: Rocking Plates. The most common reason an upper denture snaps cleanly down the middle is not dropping it; it is a fit problem. When your gum ridges shrink, the denture loses contact at the sides while still resting on the hard center of your palate. Every time you bite, the plate bends across that central fulcrum until the acrylic fatigues and snaps.

When we repair a midline fracture, we check whether your plate needs a reline to eliminate that rocking flex.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chemist repair kit fix my broken denture permanently?

No. Over-the-counter repair kits use weak, porous cold-cure resins that create thick, uneven lumps under your tongue. They are only meant as temporary 24-hour stopgaps and often interfere with proper laboratory bonding.

How much does same-day emergency denture repair cost in Melbourne?

Simple fracture repairs at our Oak Park on-site laboratory start from $140. If teeth need replacement or internal metal reinforcement is added, costs range from $180 to $280.

Can I wear a cracked denture if it still holds together?

Never wear a cracked denture. Chewing pressure will cause the hairline crack to suddenly snap during a meal, posing a choking hazard and increasing the risk of swallowing sharp acrylic pieces.

Can broken flexible dentures (Valplast) be repaired?

Flexible nylon dentures cannot be chemically bonded with standard PMMA acrylic. Small clasp adjustments and single-tooth additions can be made using specialized thermal injection units, but severe full-plate tears usually require remaking the flexible base.
